Personally, while I am surprised to hear about the significance of the coal fire that burned under her deck, it does not surprise me that those in charge would willfully ignore the dangers which led to the deaths of 1,500 people. Accompanied with the 2015 documentary ‘Drain the Titanic,’ it shows that the 100 year old findings of how and why the RMS Titanic sank have been missing some key elements. This was Olympic’s 4th funnel:įinally got around to watching a documentary that has been on my radar almost all year - ‘Titanic: The New Evidence,’ and I am blown away by this possibility. One of the boiler uptakes is pictured below:įinally, this last image shows what the top funnel sections looked like, as opposed to the lower funnel section in the top photo. The individual shafts converged at the tops of the uptakes, where they connected to the lower funnel sections. The lower portions of the uptakes were divided into multiple shafts which connected to the fronts of the boilers.

Outlined in green on the plan is the network of ventilation shafts, the boiler uptakes, which led from the individual boilers to the lower funnel section, which in turn was connected to the upper funnel, the part we’ve all seen countless times. In Boiler Room 1, the boilers were of the single-ended type, and in Boiler Rooms 2-6, they were of the double-ended type. Outlined in blue are the massive boilers. That was, of course, a fatal design flaw which doomed Titanic. those ladders would not have been sealed off either by the watertight compartments closing, as the watertight compartments were not sealed at the top. they would have simply used the aforementioned ladders to escape the boiler rooms and the flooding. This was pure drama, as they would not have done this. As a side note, everybody is familiar with the collision scene in Titanic in which the firemen (the crew who shoveled coal into the boilers) tried to escape the flooding boiler rooms by racing to get through the watertight doors as they close. The lower funnel sections were encased in large vertical shafts which ran through the decks, with networks of ladders leading upwards to the top of the casing. (Source: Titanic General Arrangement plans by Bruce Beveridge.) In the plan below, showing the boiler casing for boiler rooms 1 and 2 on Titanic, the location of the section of the funnel shown in the top photo is outlined in red: This is actually not precisely one of the funnels, as in the top sections of the funnels that we’re all familiar with seeing, but one of the lower sections of the funnels, or one of the middle sections of the general boiler exhaust assembly. Britannic is seen in the quay in the background.

Visit Titanic: Honor and Glory at our Official Website, or on Tumblr, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram If you have not yet seen it, take a look! The animation was created for the 100th anniversary of the sinking. There are also narrations by a number of people actors bring survivor accounts to life, and our historical consultants, including Parks Stephenson and Ken Marschall, provide commentary. You’ll see the progress of the sinking in real time, the launching of the lifeboats, what happened to the doomed lifeboats, and much more. It starts with a few minutes of peaceful sailing, then the sinking starts with the mine explosion. Like our real-time Titanic sinking animation, this video reconstructs the sinking of Britannic from beginning to end. Britannic sank in shallow water in the Kea Channel, just a few miles from the Greek island of Kea. Unfortunately two lifeboats were caught in the suction of the massive port propeller, which was still turning above the water, and torn to pieces along with their occupants. Despite the speed of the sinking, nearly everyone made it off in lifeboats. Open portholes and forward movement further sped up the sinking. The explosion send shocks through the ship, disabling watertight doors. We all know about the sinking of the Titanic, but what about Britannic, her lesser-known sister ship?īritannic, which was meant to be a near-identical sister ship to Titanic and serve the transatlantic route, but was pressed into service in WWI as a hospital ship, sank on November 21st, 1916 after striking an underwater mine.
